ALASKA - America's Last Frontier
Voyage organise five commercial photo shoots for Fat Face every
year, and the latest trip took the crew and models to Alaska to hang
out with wild bears and Moose for their Winter/Christmas catalogue.
Starting with the kid's shoot in Vancouver, Canada, we made the most
of the traditional art of Totem Pole carving, which made a fitting
backdrop to the season's brightly coloured knits for girls and
utility trousers for boys. Collecting fallen branches from the
nearby trees, and using an old canvas, the kids also helped to make
a Tee-Pee, which proved quite popular with the local children as well!
The following day, the crew flew to Anchorage, one of Alaska's most
heavily populated towns with around half a million people. Alaska
was chosen as the destination for this Winter shoot for its wild
country feel, abundance of wildlife, and spectacular scenery. Home
to America's highest mountain at a little over 20,000ft, Mt.
McKinley offered an incredible backdrop and the surrounding
mountains a hive of activity for the adventure-seeker.
We spent one week in the 49th state and packed in an unbelievable
itinerary. The highlights include:
Horse-riding in Talkeetna - Talkeetna is the epitome of an
old Alaskan town. Complete with its old clapperboard storefronts and
chaps-wearing cowboys, this town consists of one street, a handful
of welcoming people, and a lot of salmon on the menu! Our
horse-riding escapades were followed by some pictures being taken in
an old bar, complete with bear skin hanging from the ceiling and a
notice at the bar to leave your firearms with the bar staff!
Snow-shoeing on glaciers in the Denali range - a 45 minute
flight on a small Beaver plane took us high up into the Denali
mountain range where we were able to land and try our hand at
snow-shoeing. The air was crisp and cold, and it was our first taste
of snow underfoot.
Kayaking in Prince William Sound - Whittier is the gate to
Prince William Sound, and it also happens to be the most
inaccessible town in America! Built up by the military, Whittier is
now a small cluster of boat shops, a block of flats and a marina.
Arriving via the Anton Memorial Tunnel (only recently open to
vehicles which take turns to drive along the train tracks as they
carve their way through the mountains), we met some very unfriendly
weather. Gale force winds and torrential rain meant our boat trip, overnight camp
and sea kayaking trip around Blackstone Bay was no longer possible, so we
ducked down for the night and put Plan B into action the next morning.
Moose Pass and Trail Lake - Heading South from Whittier, we
drove along Moose Pass stopping at Trail Lake. The lake adorned with
many float planes, a typical sight in Alaska, and in the early
morning it offered a very still and silent location for our shoot.
After our early morning start we ate a hearty breakfast, then later
returned to the lake for a spot of canoeing.
Exit Glacier - Exit is one of Alaska's most well-known
glaciers as it is possible to walk straight up to the edge of it,
rather than it drop into the sea. It is receding at quite a rate,
but the glacier is still an awesome sight. Here we tried out some of
the technical gear.
