Welcome to ExpeMed, the UK's longest established Expedition Medicine training course. Caring for a seriously injured casualty in a remote area is a formidable challenge, even for the most experienced expedition medic. To make sure you’re equipped to cope with this scenario when you are needed most, it is essential to acquire the skills and knowledge to successfully manage critical situations in far from ideal situations.
With lectures and teaching from highly skilled doctors who have vast experience of the expedition field, ExpeMed is the course of choice for many doctors who wish to become Expedition Medics. The
concentrates on practical skills with small group teaching and casualty scenarios. Doctors gain skills and invaluable teaching about their role in remote expedition settings where resources are few and far between.

Course Information
ExpeMed training aims to cover all aspects of expedition medicine and is aimed at doctors, nurses, dentists and paramedics alike. ExpeMed instructors are experts from a variety of rescue, medical, teaching and expedition backgrounds.
All of our ExpeMed courses are accredited by EPASS. From 1st April 2004, EPASS (Educational Providers Accreditation Scheme) replaced PGEA (Postgraduate Education Allowance), to approve postgraduate educational activities in Scotland. ExpeMed is also approved by the MoD Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme for Forces personnel.
Course participant numbers are limited to 48 and the emphasis is on small group hands-on teaching and practical scenarios. The participants gain skills such as pre-hospital trauma management, communications, improvised splints, spinal immobilisation and expedition dentistry. Lecture sessions cover subjects such as pre-trip planning, expedition equipment, trauma management and medical emergencies. Environmental problems such as diving medicine, altitude medicine and cold injury are also covered.
The most common cause of serious injury on expeditions is road traffic accidents. Instructors from Strathclyde Fire Brigade teach skills of RTA scene management and extrication with limited equipment. This includes hands on cutting and extrication from real vehicles.
A full day of outdoor training is provided by Arrochar Mountain Rescue Team - the team demonstrates rescue and Casualty handling skills. ExpeMed participants are then given the challenge of rescuing and treating a number of live casualties during the renowned Casualty Scenarios. These scenarios aim to teach and enhance skills of teamwork, communications, leadership and improvisation. Use is made of two way radios, global positioning systems and Mountain Rescue Landrovers and equipment. Please note that in order to maximise learning of medical skills within the casualty scenarios, ExpeMed no longer includes off-road driving tuition, safety on steep ground or the helicopter session.
The course fee of £550+VAT includes all tuition, training manual, lunches, coffee and the course dinner at a Loch-side hotel. A donation is also made to
both Mountain Rescue Teams that we work with on the courses from the fees of every ExpeMed course.
Basic accommodation can be provided at Loch Lomond Youth Hostel for
our May course, and at the Hawkshead Youth Hostel for our September
course at very reasonable rates. A wide choice of hotel and bed and breakfast accommodation is also available within walking
distance from both venues.
